Clinton wins Puerto Rico
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) was projected to win the Puerto Rico primary Sunday afternoon, capping a weekend that severely hurt her chances of capturing the Democratic presidential nomination.
{mosads}Clinton’s hopes for a comeback against front-runner Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) were dashed Saturday after the Democratic Party’s rules committee voted, against the former first lady’s wishes, to award Obama 58 Michigan delegates. Each of the delegates will receive half a vote.
But despite Saturday’s drama, Clinton continued to show that she has a reservoir of good will with Hispanic voters as she was projected to coast to victory over Obama in the territory.
Puerto Rico was the 52nd contest of the protracted nomination battle, and only South Dakota and Montana remain. Voters in both states will go to the polls on Tuesday.
With only those two contests left on the calendar, the Democratic Party remains on edge as observers and analysts are watching Clinton to see if she will concede the race or push the battle to the convention in August.
Though the odds are stacked against her, Clinton has shown in recent contest that she continues to enjoy immense popularity with both blue-collar white voters and Hispanics.
