DSCC poll: Udall up big

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) released a poll Wednesday showing Rep. Tom Udall (D) with a 16-point lead over Rep. Steve Pearce (R), seeking to counter Republicans’ assertions that the race is narrowing.

The DSCC’s poll, conducted by Myers Research and Grove Insight from Sept. 10-12, showed Udall leading 57-41.

{mosads}The first few public polls after Pearce’s nasty primary against Rep. Heather Wilson (R) showed Udall winning by more than 20 points. In the last month, though, a pair of Rasmussen polls have shown the race in single digits.

The DSCC poll suggests Pearce has recovered somewhat from that primary but still trails significantly.

Democrats pointed out that Republicans yanked $2.3 million in television ads in the state, suggesting they have given up on it.

“National Republicans seem to have made the right decision when they abandoned Steve Pearce and wrote off the New Mexico Senate race earlier this month,” DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said. “Tom Udall is running a great campaign and is in a commanding position with 47 days to go until the election.”

“Every independent non-partisan poll shows the race at seven or eight points,” said Pearce spokesman Brian Phillips. “Udall has spent millions on TV ads, only to see his lead drop dramatically.”
