Bloomberg backs Dem for Fossella seat
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) has endorsed Democratic candidate Michael McMahon in his bid to take over New York’s 13th district from Republicans this fall.
{mosads}McMahon is running to replace Rep. Vito Fossella (R), who announced his retirement after being arrested for drunk driving and admitting to fathering a child out of wedlock. McMahon is running against Republican candidate Bob Straniere, whom local Republicans hurriedly nominated after their earlier choice, Frank Powers, suddenly died.
“The 13th congressional district and all of New York City need a proven leader like Mike to fight for results in Washington,” Bloomberg said. “I am proud to endorse Mike McMahon for Congress, and urge all of the voters of Staten Island and southern Brooklyn to send him to Washington this November.”
McMahon is heavily favored in the race, a major pickup opportunity this fall for Democrats in the district.
Bloomberg, a former Republican who has since left the party to call himself an Independent, had endorsed Fossella in previous election cycles.
