Snowe, Summers join Collins in criticizing McCain robo-call

GOP House candidate Charlie Summers joined Republican colleagues Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins in support of Collins’s call that the McCain campaign should stop using robo-calls in the state.

“It is something that is not productive,” Summers said. “People want to know what you’re going to do instead of tearing others down.”

{mosads}While Summers did not think the calls would affect his own campaign, he feared they would affect the overall perception of politics.

“Every person that I talk to is sick and tired of politics and the fighting that goes on,” he said.

The robo-calls emphasize Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s relationship with former domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, and have been roundly criticized as part of the negative campaigning efforts on behalf of McCain.

The Collins campaign has expressed disapproval of the robo-calls, and Collins said she “urges the McCain campaign to stop these calls immediately.”

Snowe also found herself at odds with McCain, saying the calls are “regrettable and inappropriate.” She has called for the immediate suspension of the tactic, her chief of staff, John Richter, said.
