Perriello emerges from Va. recount
Democrat Tom Perriello was confirmed Wednesday as the winner in
his race against Rep. Virgil Goode (R-Va.), as the recount in their race
concluded.
Perriello’s 745-vote margin from Election Day wound up falling by
just 18 votes, to 727.
{mosads}“I’m gratified that after an exhaustive democratic process, we now
can say with certainty that this election is over, and the 5th district has
asked me to fight for jobs and economic relief in Washington,” Perriello said
in a statement. “I am humbled that the voters have entrusted me with this
sacred duty, and I am eager to represent the entire district as we work
together to put our communities back on the path to economic revival.”
Goode’s district is one of three seats that Virginia Republicans
lost in 2008. Democrats also took over retiring Rep. Tom Davis’s and outgoing
Rep. Thelma Drake’s seats.
Perriello won on the strength of strong turnout in the
Charlottesville area, which is home to the University of Virginia.
