Gun-rights activist confronts Christie
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie got into a spat with a gun-rights activist at an Iowa rally Saturday, accusing the man of being “wrong” about his record on guns.
“I’m still waiting for one fact from you, one fact about me being anti-gun,” Christie said after taking questions a man in the audience, according to the Des Moines Register. “Give me one. One fact. Got one?”
{mosads}The man had asked Christie about his support for policies that are strongly opposed by gun rights groups, such as assault rifle bans and mandatory tracking numbers on guns.
“If you want to debate me, run for president, get in the top 10 and come to Fox in Cleveland on August 6 and I’d be happy to debate you,” Christie said at an event with about 120 people gathered in an auto garage at Des Moines Area Community College.
The man — who told the Register that he was a member of the Iowa’s Gun Owners group — pressed Christie about his support for a ban on assault rifles in 1995 during a run for state assembly.
Christie implied that his position had changed since then.
“If you haven’t changed your mind once on a single issue in 20 years, then I’ll tell you you’re not a thinking, breathing, living human being,” Christie said.
Christie has been known to spar with crowds at his rallies before, earning a reputation as a speaker who does not tolerate hecklers.
A day earlier, Christie slammed fellow 2016 GOP candidates for being too “vague” in statements about entitlement reform.
“If you continue to speak in generalities, then you’re going to have other people interpret what you mean,” he said then.
Christie is currently in ninth place in the GOP presidential race, according to a RealClearPolitics average of national polls.
