O’Donnell asks supporters to fund legal fight against FEC

The former candidate said that while she was leaning toward accepting the settlement, she wanted to gauge support for “stopping the bullying when citizen politicians step up to fight against the corruption in DC.”

O’Donnell, who has admitted that her campaign paid rent on her townhouse, accused the Washington establishment of trying to “distract us by burying us with non-sense battles.”

“This will cost us no less than $50,000 in legal fees, let alone the administrative fees for things like filing Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests,” she said. “For most politicians, that is a small amount. But for everyday Americans like you and me, it’s a lot of money.”

O’Donnell has said that she was using her home as a campaign headquarters and should not be fined for using donations to pay her rent.

2024 Election Coverage

The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington originally called for the investigation into O’Donnell’s possible misuse of campaign dollars.

“Christine O’Donnell is clearly a criminal, and like any crook she should be prosecuted,” said Melanie Sloan, CREW Executive Director, in a statement at the time. “Ms. O’Donnell has spent years embezzling money from her campaign to cover her personal expenses. Republicans and Democrats don’t agree on much these days, but both sides should agree on one point: thieves belong in jail not the United States Senate.”
