Republican PAC turning attention to Cuomo

A Republican political action committee is reportedly turning its attention and resources toward an initiative against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in preparation for his 2018 reelection campaign.

According to a report in The New York Times published Tuesday, America Rising will launch its initiative Wednesday, aimed at damaging Cuomo’s chances if he enters the 2020 presidential race.

One such effort will include a Snapchat filter focused on New York City’s recent transit problems.

“While those people are waiting on the platform, waiting for trains, they’ll be able to swipe through and find who’s responsible for the mess,” Alex Smith, the executive director of the group, told the newspaper.

{mosads}Smith told the Times that the group is working to emulate its previous initiatives against Hillary Clinton as it works on its campaign against Cuomo.

A spokesperson for the governor dismissed America Rising’s efforts, saying the political attacks will not work in New York the way they do in Washington, D.C.

“Gov. Cuomo’s initiatives — from first-in-the-nation tuition-free college, $15 minimum wage and the country’s strongest paid family leave program, to historic investments in infrastructure across the state — have overwhelming support from New Yorkers,” James Allen told the Times.

“If some Beltway hacks want to waste their special interest money to be on the other side of overwhelming support, that’s on them.”
