13 percent of GOP in CNN poll say 2020 election charges should disqualify Trump if true

A CNN poll released Tuesday found that 13 percent of Republicans and independents who lean Republican said they think Trump should be disqualified from the presidency if charges he faces connected to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election are true.

Meanwhile, 19 percent said the charges “cast doubt on his fitness for the job, but are not disqualifying” if true, and 68 percent said the charges “are not relevant to his fitness for the presidency” if accurate.

Trump is facing four major state and federal cases as he seeks another term in the White House. Two of those cases — a federal one brought by special counsel Jack Smith looking into his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, and a Georgia case brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis — involve his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump and 18 other co-defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges they face in the Georgia case.

The poll also found that 16 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters said Trump should be disqualified from the presidency if charges related to his involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection are true, 17 percent said the charges “cast doubt on his fitness for the job, but are not disqualifying” and 67 percent said they aren’t “relevant to” Trump’s “fitness for the presidency” if accurate.

Yet the poll also found that a majority of Republicans support Trump. According to the survey, 52 percent of GOP and GOP-leaning voters said they’re currently backing Trump in the presidential primary.

The poll was conducted Aug. 15-31 for CNN by the SSRS Opinion Panel and featured responses from 1,503 U.S. adults, including 898 “Republicans and Republican-leaning independents,” an oversample. It had a margin of error of 3.5 percent.
