Trump to visit Nevada following Biden trip
Former President Trump will visit Reno, Nev., later this month where he’s expected to host a rally in the key battleground state, his campaign announced Thursday.
Trump will delivery remarks to a Team Trump Nevada Commit to Caucus event Dec. 17 at the Reno Sparks Convention Center, his presidential campaign said.
The announcement for the rally comes one day ahead of President Biden’s slated trip to Las Vegas on Friday.
Few details were released surrounding Biden’s trip, though the president is likely to discuss the Brightline West rail project, a high-speed rail line expected to run from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. The Biden administration announced Tuesday that $3 billion would be given to the project.
Biden’s trip comes in the wake of a deadly mass shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas that left three people killed and another injured. Shortly after the incident, Biden renewed his push for GOP lawmakers to join with Democrats in Congress to help take action on gun control.
The timing of the trips by Trump and Biden to Nevada, about nine days apart, comes nearly two months before the Silver State will hold its Democratic primary and Republican caucus on Feb. 6 and Feb. 8, respectively.
In 2020, Biden narrowly beat Trump in Nevada by less than 3 percentage points of the total vote. Trump also lost the state in 2016 by an even smaller amount to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Trump is working to take the state from Biden in 2024.
The RealClearPolitics polling average of Nevada found Biden trailing Trump by 4 points.
“Joe Biden’s standing in Nevada probably isn’t as bad as polling suggests. But Democrats should still be worried,” Jon Ralston, a longtime chronicler of Nevada politics and founder of The Nevada Independent, wrote in a recent piece in The Atlantic.
From Las Vegas, Biden, along with first lady Jill Biden, will travel to Los Angeles later Friday and participate in a campaign reception. The first couple will stay in Los Angeles until Sunday before traveling to Wilmington, Del.
