Biden write-in campaign condemns fake robocall in New Hampshire discouraging voting on Tuesday
The organizers behind the campaign to write in President Biden’s name for the New Hampshire primary on Monday blasted a fake robocall that told people not to cast their ballots Tuesday.
“This is deep fake disinformation designed to harm Joe Biden, suppress votes, and damage our democracy,” Aaron Jacobs, a spokesperson for the write-in campaign, said in a statement.
Jacobs said the call was referred to police so they can determine who was responsible.
“We are confident that New Hampshire voters will respond by showing up to the polls and making clear that we won’t be intimidated by these dirty tricks,” Jacobs said. “We remain focused on one goal until polls close on Tuesday: encouraging Granite Staters to write-in Joe Biden.”
NBC News first reported on the robocall in which an imitation or digital manipulation of Biden’s voice urges voters to save their vote for November’s general election.
“Voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again. Your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday,” the calls says, according to NBC.
Biden’s name will not appear on the ballot because the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is not recognizing the New Hampshire primary as an official part of the nominating process.
New Hampshire officials defied the DNC’s new primary calendar, which put South Carolina first, by holding its traditional first-in-the-nation primary on Jan. 23.
Biden’s campaign is not competing in New Hampshire, but a group of Democrats in the state have organized a write-in effort in support of the president. The write-in effort, which has no affiliation with the Biden campaign, has attended dozens of meetings in recent months to get the word out and plans to have volunteers stationed at polling places around the state Tuesday.
More than 20 Democrats will have their names on the ballot Tuesday, including Rep. Dean Phillips (Minn.) and author Marianne Williamson. Phillips and Williamson are running long-shot primary campaigns against Biden.
