Manafort hospitalized while serving prison sentence

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been hospitalized after reportedly experiencing heart problems while serving his sentence in a federal prison in central Pennsylvania.

ABC News, citing two sources familiar with the situation, reported Tuesday that Manafort was admitted to a Pennsylvania hospital for a cardiac event.

Manafort’s attorney, Todd Blanche, was informed Tuesday that his client would not be appearing for a scheduled court appearance because of his medical condition. Blanche told ABC News that he hasn’t corresponded with Manafort since early last week.

Blanche confirmed to The Hill that Manafort was in the hospital and that he is in stable condition. Blanche said that he and Manafort’s family still do not have a “full understanding” of his medical condition.

“Neither his family nor I were made aware of his medical condition until after a reporter called with information they had learned about his condition, notwithstanding repeated attempts on our part to obtain information over the past several days from the Bureau of Prisons,” he said. “Regrettably, the Bureau of Prisons refused to provide any information to his family or me about Mr. Manafort’s condition or whereabouts, apart from stating he was ‘safe,’ citing privacy and safety concerns.”

Manafort, 70, was sentenced this year after being convicted for charges related to former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. His attorneys had cited his age and health issues as part of an attempt to avoid a harsh prison sentence.

Many of Manafort’s crimes were uncovered amid Mueller’s sprawling probe into Russian interference. Manafort is scheduled to be released from prison Dec. 25, 2024.
