Trump slams Biden after he drops out of race: ‘Certainly not fit to serve’
Former President Trump on Sunday ripped into President Biden shortly after the president announced he is dropping his reelection bid, warning the nation will “suffer greatly” as a result of Biden’s one term in office.
“Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was!” Trump wrote Sunday on Truth Social. “He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement. All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t.”
Trump, who was officially named the Republican Party’s presidential nominee last week, pointed to the situation at the U.S. southern border, baselessly claiming those who cross the border are “totally unchecked and unvetted.”
“We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he added.
Trump’s remarks came less than an hour after Biden dropped out of the 2024 race, capping off a 50-year-long political career.
The stunning decision by Biden follows weeks of mounting pressure from various Democrats concerned about the president’s ability to defeat Trump after his poor debate performance last month. During the debate, Biden’s speech frequently halted, and he appeared to lose his train of thought, fueling concerns over his mental acuity and age.
At 81, Biden is the oldest sitting U.S. president and has faced repeated criticism over his age and fitness for office.
Up until Sunday, Biden and his campaign team maintained he intended on staying in the race in the face of growing calls to step aside.
The president said he will address the nation later this week to discuss his decision to ultimately drop out.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted to social media.
Biden later endorsed Vice President Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee. It remains unclear if anyone will challenge Harris for the nomination.
In a post on the social platform X on Sunday, Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., argued Harris is even more liberal and less competent than Biden.
“Kamala Harris owns the entire leftwing policy record of Joe Biden,” he wrote.
