Kerrey opts not to run for Nebraska Senate seat

Former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-Neb.) will not run for the open Nebraska Senate seat in 2008, he announced Wednesday.

{mosads}In a statement posted to the state Democratic Party’s website, Kerrey said the time is not right for him and his family and that it would be too hard to leave his job as president of The New School in New York City.

But he said he still believes in politics and democracy and sounded as though he will keep an eye out for future opportunities.

He said he was close to making the leap.

“I am deeply troubled about the direction of our country,” he said. “And the idea of returning home to Nebraska to lead a political campaign based on a promise to do my part to change the direction was very appealing. I love Nebraska and believe in public service.”

Democrats will now turn to Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey and former congressional candidate Scott Kleeb as potential candidates.

Regardless, Kerrey’s decision is a boon to Republicans because he appeared to be the biggest threat to them in a red state. Former Agriculture Secretary and former Gov. Mike Johanns and state attorney general Jon Bruning lead the list of Republican candidates.
