Hoyer: Dems didn’t ‘give away the store’

{mosads}Liberal Democrats have slammed the debt-limit package as a giveaway to the wealthy at the expense of the working class because it includes hundreds of billions of dollars in domestic spending cuts but no tax-revenue increases.

“Spending cuts but no revenue increases? My constituents called, e-mailed my office asking for balance,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, tweeted Monday. “Democrats got nothing in this deal, and if we did, someone please show it to me.”

Hoyer conceded that Democrats “didn’t get the balanced package we were looking for.” But he strongly suggested that he’ll support the bill for the sake of preventing a government default and moving the national debate back to the issue of creating jobs.

“It’s time to move forward,” he said.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has held her cards more closely to her chest, saying she’ll withhold her position until she meets with the members of her caucus.

“We all may not be able to support it, or none of us may be able to support it,” Pelosi said Sunday. “But we’ll wait and see.”

The House Democratic Caucus is scheduled to meet at 1 p.m.
