Staffer arrested for taking gun to Capitol

A House staffer was arrested Friday morning for carrying a gun into the Cannon House Office Building.

Ryan Shucard, press secretary for Rep. Tom Marino (R-Pa.), was arrested at about 9:15 a.m. Friday, according to U.S. Capitol Police Public Information Officer Shennell Antrobus.

{mosads}Shucard has been charged with carrying a pistol without a license, which is a felony.

“Shucard entered the SE Door of the Cannon House Office Building. A S&W 9mm handgun & magazine were discovered during an administrative search required for entry into the building,” Antrobus said in a statement.

Shucard is currently being processed at the U.S. Capitol Police headquarters.

Bill Tighe, Marino’s chief of staff, told The Hill that Shucard has been placed on unpaid leave until further notice.

Tighe said that the office, at this point, does not believe that Shucard intended to cause a threatening situation.

“At this point, we believe this was an accident,” Tighe said.

Tighe said Marino has been informed of the arrest.

Marino’s office is located in Cannon House Office Building. Shucard has only served as press secretary for Marino since May 27, Tighe said.
