GOP rep. on son’s ‘dabbing’: ‘I had no idea what he was doing’

Rep. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) on Thursday said he didn’t understand what his son was doing when the teenager attempted to “dab” during a family swearing-in photo with Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Marshall’s son became an internet darling on Tuesday when, during a family photo with Ryan, he raised his arm to his face in a pose called the dab, prompted the House Speaker to tell him to put his arm down and stop.

Marshall told “Fox & Friends” that before the picture, his son ended up with the bible in his hand.

“And we’re getting ready for the pose, then I look beside him, he’s got his hand up in the air and the Speaker and I look at him. I thought he was going to sneeze,” he said.

“I had no idea what he was doing and still didn’t figure it out until maybe an hour or two later what had happened.”

“I think he took a dare from his buddies,” Marshall told a local TV station, “and he did it and certainly he has nothing but great admiration for our country and for the Speaker.”

Marshall’s son’s pose appeared to confuse Ryan, who could be heard in a video asking if the teen was “going to sneeze.”

Later Tuesday, Marshall tweeted that he had grounded his son.

Ryan said Tuesday he had seen “countless cute kids” but still doesn’t “get what dabbing is.”

After being sworn into the new Congress on Tuesday, Marshall paused to take a photo with his family and Ryan when the newly reelected Speaker stopped short as Marshall’s son raised his arm toward his face.

The dab took off as a trend in internet photos and videos over the last two years, popularized by celebrities and athletes including Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

During the presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton was taught how to dab on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” During a California Senate debate, then-Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) dabbed as she completed her closing statement.
