Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) on Tuesday said the acting attorney general fired by President Donald Trump is a “political hack” for refusing to enforce the recent executive order barring nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries.
“She obviously has a political agenda because if she cared about the Constitution and she thought there was some problem with naming these seven countries, she should have brought that up before Obama left office,” Gohmert told “Fox & Friends,” referring to Sally Yates.
“But politically, she showed herself to be a political hack. And hacks have to be jacked and she’s gone.”
{mosads}Trump fired Yates late Monday after she refused to allow Justice Department lawyers to defend the executive order.
Trump on Friday signed an executive order that imposed a 90-day ban on nationals from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Sudan entering the United States.
The order also calls for a 120-ban on admitting refugees and an indefinite halt on admitting refugees from war-torn Syria.
Gohmert said Trump has “got to be able” to fire someone like Yates, who was appointed by President Obama to the Justice Department.
“He’s got to be able to say those two words that viewers love to hear ‘you’re fired.’ And that’s the only way we’re going to get things cleaned up and get political acts out and get people that care more about the Constitution than their political circles,” he said, echoing Trump’s “drain the swamp” theme from his presidential campaign.
“And then when you start getting this town cleaned up, it will start smelling as pretty as it looks.”
Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), is awaiting a confirmation hearing, which could come as soon as this week.
