Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) on Tuesday said the White House is “in denial” over President Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that former President Obama wiretapped Trump Tower.
“The only problem is that you have a White House that’s in denial,” Speier told CNN’s “New Day.” “The president never ever steps back. He never apologizes. And I think the result is is that this denial is going to continue to fester.”
FBI Director James Comey during his Monday testimony in front of the House Intelligence Committee said he had “no information” to support Trump’s allegations.
{mosads}Responding to a question about whether Trump will backtrack on the claims, White House press secretary Sean Spicer later said, “No, we started a hearing. It’s still ongoing.
“I think he’s just flummoxed. I don’t think he knew where to go with it. He’s often times put it in a very difficult position,” Speier said of Spicer on Tuesday.
The congresswoman characterized Trump’s allegations as “a Saturday morning tweet when he was unaccounted for.”
“And the result is is that we’re living with it,” said Speier.
