Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) on Tuesday said she does not trust House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) as Democratic lawmakers call on Nunes to recuse himself from the committee’s probe into Russian interference in last year’s presidential election.
“I don’t trust him,” Speier told CNN’s “New Day”.
“I mean, I think he is a very nice man. I think he is, frankly, over his head. I think he used very poor judgment and I think he has tainted the committee.”
{mosads}Speier, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee with Nunes, also said she believes President Trump doesn’t want the committee’s investigation to proceed.
“I actually think that there is an effort under way to shut this committee down, by the president,” she said.
Democratic lawmakers, including Speier, on Monday called on Nunes to recuse himself after the chairman admitted he had visited White House grounds to meet with a source and view classified material one day before his meeting with Trump.
Speier in her call for Nunes’s recusal on Monday said his announcement of the meeting was “the last straw.”
“And if he can knock us off, then he’s only got to find a way to knock off the Senate investigation,” Speier added in the Tuesday morning interview.
