Freedom Caucus member fires back: The swamp drained Trump

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), a member of the House Freedom Caucus, fired back Thursday at President Trump’s threat to “fight” conservative members in 2018, turning Trump’s campaign slogan around on him.

“It didn’t take long for the swamp to drain @realDonaldTrump. No shame, Mr. President. Almost everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment,” Amash tweeted.

{mosads}Amash’s tweet came shortly after Trump tweeted that the Freedom Caucus “will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don’t get on the team” and threatened to “fight them” in the 2018 midterms.

The GOP’s ObamaCare repeal plan was pulled from the House floor last week after the Freedom Caucus and other Republicans said they wouldn’t support it.

Trump and Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) had tried to woo skeptical members of the Freedom Caucus, with White House meetings and a bowling session with Trump. Yet no deal could be struck, as the lawmakers balked at a bill that they believed did not go far enough.

In the aftermath, Trump has blamed Democrats, none of whom backed the bill, as well as Freedom Caucus members.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), a libertarian who is not in the Freedom Caucus but often aligns with them, echoed Amash in his own criticism of Trump for lashing out.

“.@realDonaldTrump it’s a swamp not a hot tub. We both came here to drain it.  #SwampCare polls 17%. Sad!” Massie tweeted.
