House Speaker Paul Ryan on Sunday said he’s not worried about a midterm wave in 2018.
“I’m not,” the Wisconsin Republican said when asked on ABC’s “This Week” how worried he is about a midterm wave as backlash to the GOP’s healthcare bill.
“No. 1, healthcare is a complicated and very emotional personal issue and we completely understand that.”
Ryan said the current system is failing, adding that Republicans are “stepping in front of it and rescuing people from a collapsing system.”
“And more importantly, we’re keeping our word. That’s really important here,” he said.
{mosads}”People expect their elected leaders that they run and campaign on doing something — they expect them to do that, and that’s what we’re doing. We’re keeping our word,” he continued.
“And I would argue that we would spell disaster for ourselves, politically if that’s your question, if we go back on our word.”
Ryan said Republicans are looking to fix a “real problem that real people are experiencing in this country.”
Last week, the House narrowly passed legislation aimed at repealing and replacing ObamaCare.
