Deutsche Bank asks for more time on Trump, Russia info

Germany’s largest bank has asked House Democrats for more time before it provides information on President Trump’s possible financial ties to Russia.

Deutsche Bank’s external counsel made the request in a letter dated June 2 to Democrats on the House Financial Services Committee, Reuters reported Monday. A person familiar with the matter declined to specify to Reuters how much more time Deutsche Bank asked for.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Monday confirmed through a staff member that the bank did not give “substantive responses to our requests.”

{mosads}Waters was one of five Financial Services panel Democrats who sent Deutsche’s chief executive officer, John Cryan, a letter last month seeking information about Trump’s past transactions.

They asked for details on whether Russia’s government backed loans for Trump’s real estate business.

The message also gave Deutsche, which has declined to comment on any of its business dealings with Trump, until last Friday to respond.

“Congress remains in the dark on whether loans Deutsche Bank made to President Trump were guaranteed by the Russian government, or were in any way connected to Russia,” the Democrats’ letter said.

“It is critical that you provide this committee with the information necessary to assess the scope, findings and conclusions of your internal reviews.”

The Financial Services panel has the power to subpoena the documents, but such a move would require support from its GOP members.

Republicans are the majority on the committee, and no Republican signed last month’s letter to Deutsche.
