Pelosi: I never said Comey should be fired

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Monday disputed a talk show host’s statement that the she wanted former FBI Director James Comey to be fired. 

“Congresswoman, you yourself said that you thought that Comey’s behavior was inappropriate, his actions were inappropriate, and that he should be fired,” Sunny Hostin, a co-host on ABC’s “The View,” told Pelosi.

“No, I never said he should be fired,” Pelosi said. 

“What I said was when he — what he did as far as Hillary Clinton was concerned — was he couldn’t take the heat for it,” Pelosi said, referencing Comey’s controversial decision to share information about the investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server ahead of the presidential election.

{mosads}Hostin then pointed to Pelosi’s comments  days before the election that Comey may not be “in the right job.”

“He wasn’t in a job that he couldn’t take the heat for it,” the California lawmaker responded. 

Pelosi said she believes Comey’s actions affected the election.

“But it was very curious, and I thought that his revealing that investigation but then later coming back — he had an impact on the election. There’s no question about that,” she added. “But that’s a separate issue from whether the president of the United States asked him to stop an investigation of the Russian connection, of himself.”

President Trump fired Comey last month amid an ongoing investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Pelosi added on Monday that there is a “possibility of obstruction of justice — flirting with it in any event — coming out of the White House.”

Comey is set to testify before Congress on Thursday.

The White House announced Monday that it will not assert executive privilege to prevent Comey from testifying.
