Dem lawmakers receive phone calls saying, ‘You guys are next’

Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-Calif.) said multiple Democratic House lawmakers have received threatening phone calls saying, “You guys are next,” following an incident in which a gunman opened fire on GOP lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice, BuzzFeed reported Wednesday.

During a members-only security briefing, Democratic representatives said they had received similar threatening phone calls on their personal phones, Barragán told the news outlet.

Barragán did not disclose the identity of her colleagues who are receiving the threats, citing safety reasons. 

BuzzFeed reports that the California lawmaker did not receive one of these calls herself, but that “other Democratic members expressed concern that they were getting calls saying, ‘You Democrats, you Democrats.’ ” 

{mosads}One lawmaker to reportedly receive such calls was not a member of the Democratic baseball team.

Republican lawmakers are also receiving threatening messages following the incident.

The office of Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) said they received a “disturbing” email with the subject line “One down, 216 to go…” following the shooting.

The person who sent the email began by asking, ”Did you NOT expect this?”

“Did you NOT expect this? When you take away ordinary peoples very lives in order to pay off the wealthiest among us, your own lives are forfeit. Certainly, your souls and morality were lost long before. Good riddance,” the email said.

A gunman opened fire on Wednesday morning, shooting dozens of rounds at the GOP lawmakers who attended baseball practice at a park in Alexandria, Va., for the bipartisan Congressional Baseball Game for Charity that is scheduled for Thursday.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and four others were wounded, according to multiple reports. 

The shooter has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., who died after also being wounded during the shootout.

Scalise is in “critical condition” after undergoing surgery for his gunshot wound, the hospital caring for him announced.
