GOP rep: Capitol Police saved ‘every one of our lives’

Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) on Thursday lauded Capitol Police for saving the lives of numerous people when a shooter opened fire at a congressional baseball practice near Washington, D.C.

“It was crazy. We didn’t know where the gunfire was coming from. We didn’t know who the fire was coming from,” he said on CBS “This Morning.”

“We’re blessed, but I want to tell you … these Capitol Police saved every one of our lives. We would not be here today if it was not for the thin blue line that the Capitol Police did,” he continued.

“We owe it all to them.”

{mosads}The shooting Wednesday at a Republican baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., wounded five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), who was in critical condition as of Wednesday night.

An aide to Williams was among those shot Wednesday. The staff member posted on Facebook that he is OK.

Following the shooting, many lawmakers praised the Capitol Police, while President Trump called for unity.

“We may have our differences, but we do well in times like these to remember everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country,” Trump said during a statement delivered in the Diplomatic Room of the White House.

“We can all agree that we are blessed to be Americans, that our children deserve to grow up in a nation of safety and peace and we are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good.”
