Scalise’s condition upgraded to fair

The condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) was upgraded Wednesday from serious to fair, one week after he was shot at a baseball practice.

“Congressman Steve Scalise continues to make good progress. He is now listed in fair condition and is beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation,” MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where Scalise was taken, said in a statement.

A gunman opened fire last Wednesday, shooting dozens of rounds at the GOP lawmakers at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., one day ahead of the bipartisan Congressional Baseball Game for Charity.

{mosads}James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill., has been identified by law enforcement as the shooter. Scalise and four others were injured.

Scalise underwent several surgeries after a single shot went through his left hip and “traveled straight across toward the other hip, in what we call a transpelvic gunshot wound,” the hospital said on Friday. “The round fragmented, and caused significant damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels.”

Vice President Pence, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and other lawmakers participated in a blood drive on Tuesday in honor of the victims injured in the attack.

The FBI said Wednesday that the shooter, who died shortly after sustaining injuries in a confrontation with police, worked alone and that the incident had “no nexus to terrorism.”

The agency also confirmed Hodgkinson had a paper list containing six lawmakers’ names, although they said they would not classify it as a “hit list.”
