Ryan attacks cable news in op-ed
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) called Tuesday for people to ignore the cable news “bickering,” pointing instead to the progress Ryan said Congress is making.
In an op-ed published Tuesday in the Independent Journal Review, Ryan wrote that Congress has ignored or downplayed measures passed by Congress.
But Ryan vowed that members of the House would continue to do their jobs and keep their promises to the American people.
“Sometimes the noise drowns out the good news,” Ryan wrote in the op-ed.
{mosads}”And it certainly is right now. It would be hard to fault the average American for thinking all that’s going on in Washington these days is high-drama hearings and partisan sniping,” he continued.
“But amid the countdown clocks and cable news chatter, something important is happening: Congress is getting things done to help improve people’s lives.”
Ryan said the House has been delivering on its promises to the American people through passing legislation and doing its job.
“You just may not have heard about it,” he wrote.
The Speaker cited other examples of Democrats and Republicans working together on issues like veterans affairs and expanding “career and technical education opportunities.”
Ryan pointed to Congress’s actions last week in sending President Trump “the biggest reform of the [Department of Veterans Affairs] since its inception.”
“Chances are you heard about the scandal, and not last week’s important fix,” Ryan wrote. “But nonetheless, this Republican government is showing we can get big things done.”
He also touted wins on national security and said the House will vote this week on “landmark legislation to strengthen enforcement of our immigration laws.”
“These are real wins — not for ourselves, not for our party, but for real people,” he wrote.
“Good policy is the business of improving lives. And for me, good policy has always trumped petty politics. When people’s lives are changed for the better, even when it’s not reported, we’ve done our job.”
Ryan vowed that the House would keep working to solve problems and keep its promises.
“Amidst the noise, the People’s House will continue to fulfill the promises we made to the American public,” he wrote.
