Congressional Black Caucus calls for Sessions to resign

The Congressional Black Caucus is calling for the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, accusing him of lying “under oath on more than one occasion.”

In a Monday statement, the CBC said a majority of its members last week voted in favor of asking the head of the Justice Department to resign.

“Attorney General Sessions is unfit to serve as the top law enforcement official in the nation and should resign from the position immediately,” the caucus said, alleging that the former Alabama senator has repeatedly misrepresented his interactions with Russian officials during last year’s election.

“As the old saying goes, ‘fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.’ Attorney General Sessions is treating Congress and the American people like fools.”

The CBC noted that its vote on Sessions’s resignation was held before The Washington Post published a report on Friday about intercepted communications that suggest Sessions discussed campaign issues with Russia’s former ambassador to the United States, which he had previously denied. 

“First, he told the Senate under oath that he did not meet with Russian officials during the 2016 presidential election, and then, after reports contradicted that claim, he told the Senate that he did meet with Russian officials, but that he didn’t talk with them about the campaign. On Friday, we learned that the latter claim is likely false.”

The CBS also accused Sessions of violating his recusal regarding federal probes of the Russian hacking.

That recusal continues to anger President Trump, who has slammed Sessions in public for backing away from the investigation, calling him “beleaguered” in a Monday tweet.

Trump has reportedly floated the possibility of replacing Sessions with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), who was also an early campaign supporter.
