GOP lawmaker: Trump is slamming the door on ‘Dreamers’

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) blasted President Trump after he reportedly decided to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“After teasing Dreamers for months with talk of his “great heart,” [Trump] slams door on them. Some “heart”…” Ros-Lehtinen tweeted Sunday.

Politico first reported Sunday that Trump is planning on ending DACA with a six-month delay, terminating protections for undocumented immigrants who were brought into the U.S. as minors and sought work permits.

When asked if he was planning on ending DACA on Friday, Trump replied, “We love Dreamers, we love everybody.”

While the term “Dreamers” was coined to refer to those who benefitted from the passage of the DREAM Act, it’s also used frequently by public officials when talking about DACA recipients.

Ros-Lehtinen, who represents Miami, a city with a huge immigrant population, was the first Cuban-American in Congress. She is stepping down from her seat at the end of her term.

GOP lawmakers have called on Trump to keep the DACA protections in place for the time being, including House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

The six-month window would give Congress the chance to step in and pass further protections, but GOP leaders have struggled to pass immigration legislation in the past.
