Dem rep predicts ‘civil war’ in Republican Party if Trump ends DACA with delay

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) is warning of sharp divides in the Republican Party if President Trump choses to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program with a six-month delay.

During an interview on CNN’s “New Day” on Tuesday, Cuellar called immigration reform one of the most emotional issues he’s seen “on the side of the Republican Party.”

“I think what’s going to happen if the president delays this for six months, it’s going to make it difficult, and I hope we can pass the DREAM Act,” he said, referring to the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, which was first introduced in 2001.

Cuellar said members of the Republican Party have different opinions on the issue.

“Some of them, the anti-immigrant folks are very strong … and then on the other side, you got some Republicans that want to do the right thing,” he said.

A report Sunday said President Trump decided to end the DACA program with a six-month delay. 

Politico reported that Trump discussed how to end DACA with top White House aides.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called on Trump not to end the program.

Trump is expected to make an announcement Tuesday about the program’s future.
