Former Dem IT staffer who fled country to return to US, face charges

A former Democratic congressional staffer who fled to Pakistan in the face of criminal charges has reached a deal with federal prosecutors, allowing her to return to the U.S. and face charges at the end of September, The Washington Examiner reported on Wednesday.

Hina Alvi, along with her husband Imran Awan, is currently facing charges for bank fraud and conspiracy. Awan, who worked as a staffer for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), attempted to leave the country in July.

Wasserman Schultz’s office announced that it had fired Awan following his arrest at Dulles International Airport.

Alvi’s deal with federal prosecutors was designed to avoid having her be arrested in front of her children after she arrives back in the country, according to the Examiner.

The former staffer will be required to hand over her passport to officials and will not be allowed to make plans to travel outside of the U.S.

Alvi and Awan reportedly worked for House Democrats for years and made millions of dollars on the House payroll over at least a decade of work for various members, according to a Politico report.

The couple, who are believed to have had access to sensitive government information, are at the center of a Capitol Police and FBI investigation probing purchases on computers and equipment that disappeared.
