Rep. Frederica Wilson’s (D-Fla.) staff in D.C. say the office has received several threatening phone calls directed at the lawmaker after she said President Trump made controversial comments to the wife of a fallen soldier.
Wilson’s staff told CBS4 that the threats were directly related to Wilson’s account of the phone call between Trump and the widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson.
{mosads}Wilson said Tuesday that Trump had told Johnson’s widow that he “knew what he signed up for but when it happens it hurts anyway.”
Johnson was one of four U.S. soldiers killed in an ambush in Niger two weeks ago.
The lawmaker’s staff informed the Capitol Police, the House’s threat division and the Miami Garden police of the threats, according to CBS. Wilson is currently safe and being protected.
Wilson slammed Trump’s comments as “insensitive” and that he “shouldn’t have said it” to Johnson’s widow.
Trump is facing backlash for his comments to Johnson’s widow. He accused Wilson of having “totally fabricated” the account, but Johnson’s mother confirmed the story.
“I didn’t say what that congresswoman said — didn’t say it at all — she knows it,” Trump said on Wednesday. “I would like her to make the statement again because I did not say what she said.”
