Scalise calls Texas shooting ‘devastating’

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), a victim of a shooting himself, reacted Sunday to news of a mass shooting at a Texas church, calling it “devastating.”

“Devastating news from Texas today,” Scalise tweeted. “Praying for the victims, the heroic first responders and the whole Sutherland Springs community.”

Twenty-six people are dead and multiple people are injured after a gunman opened fire Sunday morning at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The gunman, who has not been identified, was killed following a brief car chase with police.

Sutherland Springs is a town of less than 1,000 people located about 40 miles east of San Antonio.

Scalise, who serves as the House Majority Whip, was shot in the hip in June while attending a baseball practice with Republican colleagues. He returned to the Capitol in September, and later said the incident “fortified” his views against gun control.
