Father of murdered journalist mulling run for Goodlatte’s seat: report

The father of the journalist who was killed during a live TV broadcast is reportedly thinking about a run for Congress.

Andy Parker said he was discussing with his family a potential run for the seat held by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), CNN reported

“I’ve got some time to ponder it,” he told CNN.

Parker’s comments come after Goodlatte, the House Judiciary Committee chairman, announced Thursday he wouldn’t seek reelection. Goodlatte is the latest in a string of GOP lawmakers to announce their retirement.

Parker’s daughter, Alison Parker, was shot and killed during a live broadcast in 2015. On Tuesday, Chris Hurst, Alison’s boyfriend at the time, won his race for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, defeating three-term incumbent Del. Joseph Yost, a Republican.

“I feel like the dog chasing the car and finally caught it,” Parker told CNN about hearing the news that Goodlatte would not seek reelection.

“I’m just glad to see the guy is finally going to get out of office,” he said.

He said it’s good for the country that the Virginia Republican is leaving office. Parker had hit Goodlatte for his links to the National Rifle Association, according to CNN.

If he decided to run and won, Parker would have to move because he doesn’t live in the district. His daughter lived in Goodlatte’s district, according to CNN.
