GOP lawmaker: Trump a ‘factor’ in why I’m not seeking reelection
Rep. Dave Trott (R-Mich.) cited President Trump as a “factor” in why he decided not to seek reelection.
When asked during an interview with CNBC why he isn’t running again, Trott said “it’s not the right time” for him to be in Washington.
“We’re not that productive,” he said.
{mosads}”And that certainly isn’t just a consequence of President Trump. They weren’t that productive before he ever got there, but it’s just not the right time for me to be serving.”
Trott was pressed on whether Trump is also “part of the issue.”
“It’s a factor,” he said.
“We have different styles and I sometimes don’t understand some of the things he does and says,” he continued.
“It’s a very partisan environment and I think that problem has been exacerbated under President Trump.”
He cited Trump’s comments after the violence in Charlottesville, Va., and the health-care debate.
“I mean the president blamed the Senate. I’m not sure Reagan would have had a problem with the Senate,” he said.
Trott announced earlier this year he would not seek reelection. He is leaving the House after two terms.
When he announced his decision, he cited a desire to spend more time with family.
