Dem lawmaker: Mueller braver on weakest day than Trump on his best

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) defended special counsel Robert Mueller on Tuesday following recent claims from Republicans that members of Mueller’s team are biased against President Trump. 

“Bob Mueller, Purple Heart recipient, is braver on his weakest day than Donald Trump or anyone on his team on their best,” Swalwell told MSNBC’s Ari Melber.

Republicans have in recent weeks seized on the revelations that one member of Mueller’s team was fired for sending anti-Trump text messages, while another sent an email in support of former acting Attorney General Sally Yates when she refused to uphold Trump’s travel ban in January.

Mueller is leading the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.

{mosads}“I believe that whatever he finds the country will accept. And actually I hope that Republicans in Congress speak up and put an end to this nonsense, this effort to drag his name through the mud to further Donald Trump’s narrative on what happened with Russian interference,” Swalwell said.

Four individuals have been indicted or pleaded guilty thus far in Mueller’s probe.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his former associate, Richard Gates, were indicted in October on tax fraud and money laundering charges.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos have pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

Trump has repeatedly claimed there is no evidence of collusion between his campaign and Russia. He has frequently dismissed Mueller’s probe and congressional investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, calling the claims of Russian meddling an excuse by Democrats for losing the election.
