Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.) on Wednesday told his colleagues he is certain Russia “will be back next year” to attempt to interfere with American elections.
“The ongoing threat to the integrity of our elections is real and only likely to increase is 2018,” he said during a speech on the House floor.
Schneider said Congress and the Department of Justice should collaborate to implement measures to protect the country’s election systems and called the lack of movement from the Trump administration thus far “unacceptable.”
{mosads}“The clock is quite literally ticking,” he said, noting 2018 midterm elections are less than a year away.
Intelligence officials have concluded Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election. President Trump, however, has at times cast doubt on whether he agrees.
Schneider is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, which is one of several congressional committees conducting an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 race.
He expressed disappointment in the recent testimony from Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, both of whom spoke before the committee in recent weeks.
“This is not a partisan issue. The very foundation of our democracy depends on the integrity of our elections,” Schneider said.
