Dem rep on Trump tweets: ‘I think his Twitter account should be shut down’

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) on Thursday said President Trump’s Twitter account should be shut down, saying it will make the country “less safe” moving forward.

“This should send out a huge red flag to every American, because what we now have is someone who is acting as the president, he’s a reality president, who watches Fox News, and based on what he hears there, he tweets,” Speier said on CNN.

“I think his Twitter account should be shut down, and he should listen to the experts who he is surrounded by who have really important information to share with him,” she added.

{mosads}The House on Thursday approved legislation to renew government surveillance powers, but Trump caused waves this morning among lawmakers when he sent out a tweet that appeared to contradict his own administration’s views on the law.

Hours later, he sent out a second tweet walking back his initial remarks.

Speier said Thursday she doesn’t believe the president knew what House members were voting on when he tweeted.

Trump’s tweets in recent weeks have prompted discussion over his fitness for office, particularly after one tweet in which he bragged that his “nuclear button” was bigger than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s.

Twitter last week explained why it won’t deactivate Trump’s account, saying world leaders are not subject to the same content policies as other users.

“Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial tweets, would hide important information people should be able to see and read,” the company said.
