House Dem makes fiery call for Trump’s impeachment

Rep. Al Green is doubling down on his push to impeach President Trump against the wishes of Democratic leadership, arguing there is “bigotry emanating from the presidency.”

In an impassioned floor speech Wednesday, the Texas Democrat — who previously introduced two articles of impeachment that overwhelmingly failed on the House floor — cited Trump’s travel ban, his opposition to transgender people in the military and his immigration policy as reasons to expel him from office. 

{mosads}”Mr. Speaker, the presidency is about the people. It’s about the people’s House, and the people have the right to address this invidious discrimination emanating from the presidency,” he said. “I’m not going to stand for it, others may stand for it. You know there’s bigotry emanating from the presidency, yet you would not want me to stand here and address it. I will address it.”

Despite being told by the speaker pro tempore that “members are reminded to refrain from engaging in personalities towards the president,” Green continued to blast Trump for the controversial comments made during the course of his presidency, including referring to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as “shithole countries.”

“This president has exhibited a kind of bigotry that this country ought not tolerate. And when he said that there was some s-hole countries as he was addressing his immigration policy, he was putting his bigotry into policy,” he said. “And that is something that we all should concern ourselves with — the fact that the president’s policies are based upon his bigotry. Impeachment is the remedy.”

House Democratic leadership has voiced opposition to impeaching Trump, arguing it’s premature and could give Republicans an edge during the midterm election cycle. Green slammed Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for downplaying or dismissing his efforts. 

“It is regrettable that Leader Pelosi would trivialize President Trump’s hateful discrimination against Jews, Latinos, Blacks, Women, and the LGBTQ community by reducing the President’s harmful bigotry to his ‘being a jerk,’ ” he said in a statement Monday. “Love for my country will not permit me to allow the President’s bigotry to be trivialized and minimized.”
