Pelosi: Every day Congress fails to address gun violence ‘is a stain on our country’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday called for Congress to take up legislation on gun safety in the aftermath of a shooting at a Maryland newspaper.

“Praying for everyone injured & the families of those lost in today’s shooting at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. Congress has a responsibility to take action to prevent the tragedy of gun violence. Every day it fails to do so is a stain on our country,” Pelosi tweeted.

Multiple people were shot Thursday at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette. Some reporters tweeted as the tragedy unfolded.

Phil Davis, who covers crime and courts for the newspaper, tweeted that “a single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead.”

“Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad,” Davis tweeted.

Authorities had not provided a formal casualties as of 4:15 p.m. EST.

The Annapolis incident marks the latest mass shooting in the U.S.

In recent months, there have been deadly shootings at schools in Parkland, Fla., and Santa Fe, Texas; a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas; and a music festival in Las Vegas.

Congress passed a bill that increased funding for the national background check system following the Parkland shooting. Lawmakers have not taken up legislation that would raise age restrictions on firearms purchases or ban certain assault weapons, both of which have been pushed by gun safety advocates.
