Poll: Republicans favor Scalise for Speaker; Dems favor Pelosi

A new poll shows Republican voters favor House Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) to succeed retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) should the GOP keep control of the chamber in the midterm elections.

A Morning Consult/Politico poll found ten percent of registered voters said Scalise would be their pick. House Freedom Caucus founder Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was preferred by seven percent of registered voters, while six percent preferred House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

The poll also showed Democrats favoring House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to retake the speaker’s gavel should the Democrats take control of the House.

The poll has her beating House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and her 2014 opponent for the leadership Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio). However, 54 percent of registered Democrats polled said they didn’t know or had no opinion.

The poll was conducted through online interviews between August 10-12 and has a margin of error of +/- two percent.
