Jenkins resigns from House, is sworn in on W.Va. Supreme Court

Former Rep. Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) on Monday was sworn in as a justice on West Virginia’s Supreme Court of Appeals after resigning Sunday from his House seat.

Jenkins was previously a candidate for a Senate seat from West Virginia before losing in the GOP primary to West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

{mosads}West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) appointed Jenkins to the state Supreme Court to fill the vacated seat of Justice Robin Davis, who resigned after West Virginia’s House of Delegates voted to impeach her.

“None of us are blind to the state of affairs of our great state of West Virginia,” Jenkins said Monday, according to West Virginia Metro News. “Each of us has a great responsibility in this time of challenge to stand up for our Constitution.”

Jenkins resigned Sunday from his seat in the House representing West Virginia’s 3rd Congressional District. The seat will remain vacant until his successor takes office in January, the Gazette Mail reported.

On the ballot to replace Jenkins are state Sen. Richard Ojeda (D) and state Del. Carol Miller (R). The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the race as “leans Republican.”
