Pelosi meets with Parkland students and parents, says gun control would be atop Dems’ agenda

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) reportedly told a group of parents and students from Parkland, Fla. on Wednesday that gun control would be at the top of the Democrats’ agenda if they are to win back the House in November’s midterms.

Pelosi made the comments during a roundtable in South Florida that included students and parents from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, according to the Miami Herald. A shooting at the high school earlier this year left 17 dead and sparked national protests over gun laws.

{mosads}Pelosi called the students and parents a “blessing” and told them that Democrats would take up gun restrictions if they take control of the House.

“I admire you so much,” she said, according to the Herald. “You have the purpose, the generosity of spirit. You have the marchers — you have people who will go out there to make a difference — and you just have a relentless, persistent, dissatisfied approach.”

Pelosi also told the Parkland parents and students that she supports a ban on assault weapons, but added that universal background checks might be a more feasible piece of legislation to pursue, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

“What saves the most lives is the background checks — keeping guns out of the hands of people who should not have them, whatever the weaponry,” she said.
