Pelosi: Americans ‘deserve real action’ on gun control after California shooting

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) issued a statement Thursday calling for “real action” on stopping gun violence after a shooting at a bar in California left a dozen people dead and more injured.

The attack, which Pelosi called a “staggering tragedy,” occurred late Wednesday at a popular bar in a Los Angeles suburb that was hosting a “college country music night,” according to the Democratic leader’s statement.

{mosads}“Our nation awoke to news of a mass shooting of staggering tragedy and heartbreak. It is particularly wrenching that this attack was carried out at a bar hosting a college night, targeting innocent young people enjoying an evening of music and community,” Pelosi wrote.

“The American people deserve real action to end the daily epidemic of gun violence that is stealing the lives of our children on campuses, in places of worship and on our streets,” she added.

In the statement, Pelosi pledged that gun control would be a top priority for House Democrats in the new Congress beginning next year, where Democrats will hold the majority after seizing dozens of seats in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

“House Democrats will fight to pass bipartisan, commonsense solutions to prevent gun violence in communities across the country,” Pelosi said.

“May it bring some measure of comfort to all who have been hurt or have lost loved ones that so many grieve and pray with them during this time.”

Congress passed measures aimed at improving school safety but declined to act on gun law reform earlier in 2017 following a mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., that left 15 students and faculty members dead.
