Incoming N.J. Dem lawmaker says she won’t vote for Pelosi as Speaker
Rep.-elect Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) said Monday that she will not be voting for current House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to serve as Speaker.
“I have been talking about how important it is we have new leadership in Congress right now,” Sherrill told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Monday. “And so I won’t be voting for Nancy Pelosi.”
“But she has been a very effective Speaker to this point,” she added.
{mosads}”I do think it is important we move forward with new leadership.”
There has been some opposition against Pelosi among Democrats, threatening to undercut her run for Speaker.
However, Democratic House leadership has supported Pelosi and on Sunday, the top three Democrats on the House’s investigative committees came out in support of her.
The likely next chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), said Sunday that Pelosi has his support.
“I think she’s one of the finest legislative craftspeople of our time,” he added in appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) also voiced their support.
We need the strongest general that we have. We need the best tactician. We need the best organizer. And that’s her,” said Schiff, the soon-to-be chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, while on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“She’s got my vote. Nancy Pelosi is battle-tested,” said Cummings, who is slated to become chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
The Hill has reached out to Pelosi’s office for comment.
