Retiring congressman says he plans to try marijuana regardless of whether his state legalizes it

Retiring Rep. Robert Brady (D-Pa.) said in a recent interview that he is interested in trying marijuana — regardless of whether his state moves to legalize it.

Brady reportedly made the remark in an interview with Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Claudia Vargas, who profiled the Pennsylvania Democrat ahead of his retirement from Congress next month, according to The Boston Globe.

Although Pennsylvania moved to legalize medical marijuana in 2016 and became the first state to codify research on the substance into law, cannabis is not fully legal in the state yet. 

However, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf (D) signaled interest in looking at legislation that would legalize recreational use of the drug in a tweet last week.

“More and more states are successfully implementing marijuana legalization, and we need to keep learning from their efforts,” Wolf said during a Twitter Q&A last week.

“Any change would take legislation. But I think it is time for Pennsylvania to take a serious and honest look at recreational marijuana,” he added.
