Meadows reelected House Freedom Caucus chairman

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) was elected to serve a second term as chairman of the House Freedom Caucus on Monday.

Meadows will stay on for an additional year and the group will then “elect a new chairman this off-cycle year,” according to a source with knowledge of the discussions.

The group added two additional officer positions, a source familiar with the meeting confirmed.

Meadows is one of President Trump’s top allies and confidants in the House.

{mosads}The group of firebrand conservatives was established in 2015 and now contains more than 30 members. It has earned a reputation for being a thorn in the side of GOP leadership during Republicans’ time in the majority in the lower chamber.

Freedom Caucus members have been credited in playing a major role in the ouster of former Speaker John Boehner, who retired shortly after Meadows introduced a measure to unseat the Ohio Republican from his leadership role. The group has successfully used tactics to pull the party’s legislative proposals to the right on issues ranging from health care to immigration.
