Congress sees approval rating slide to 13 percent
Congress’s approval rating has slipped to 13 percent, according to a Gallup poll released Friday.
The approval rating, the lowest for Congress since 2017, comes in the wake of weeks of chaos in the House over its next Speaker. The rating is down 4 percentage points from last month and is 8 points lower than a year ago.
Gallup noted that views of Congress in the new survey fell among respondents from both parties.
Democrats’ approval rating currently stands at 10 percent, down from 22 percent last month. Republicans, whose approval rating of Congress was 9 percent in September, now give Congress an 8 percent approval rating.
“Americans already viewed Congress quite negatively before the recent turmoil over the speakership,” Gallup said in an analysis on the data. “Still, that drama further eroded Americans’ image of the legislative branch, primarily among Democrats. Congress’ actions over the next few weeks will help determine if it can regain some of the public trust it has lost in the past month.”
In another Gallup survey released earlier this week, President Biden’s approval rating dropped 4 points in the past month to 37 percent. His approval rating slid 11 points among Democrats, with 75 percent now approving of his job.
The poll of 1,009 adults was conducted Oct. 2-23. It has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
