Ocasio-Cortez talks wearing ‘suffragette’ white: ‘So much more that we have to fight for’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday that she was wearing “suffragette” white to President Trump’s State of the Union address because “there’s so much more that we have to fight for.”

“2019 is the 100th anniversary of the women’s right to vote … and there’s so much more that we have to fight for,” Ocasio-Cortez told CNN before the event.

She also added that the record number of women in the freshman class of Congress showed that the fight for gender equality has reaped rewards.

Dozens of lawmakers, the majority of which were Democratic women, showed up in white to Trump’s address.

Last week, the House Democratic Women’s Working Group urged female members from both parties to wear white to the event in homage to the suffragette movement.

Democratic women in 2017 also wore white during Trump’s joint address to Congress to show their support for women’s issues, including equal pay and reproductive rights.
